Denise Natanson-Marcus is an artist who has always wished to express the deep, peaceful beauty of nature through her paintings. She had classical training at Boston University School of Fine Arts, and has painted representationally for 45 years. She has always been drawn to the California artists and their contemporary realism, as well as the Impressionists.  This has influenced her composition and sense of light in her paintings.

Denise has studied & taught meditation for 41 years.  This is an important part of her life, & has informed her artwork.

She has studied with a few masters of contemporary landscape and of color, including Thomas Leighton, Henry Hensche, Wolf Kahn, Dwayne Wakeham & Ned Mueller, which has changed her palette dramatically over the years.

“My goal is to capture the light of California and the West.  I hope the viewer can enter the painting and be transported to a particular place, season and time of day. That this will be a peaceful place, a meditation, as it was to me when I painted it.” - Denise Natanson-Marcus
Denise has painted on location “plein aire” for the past twenty years.  It takes several painting sessions to complete a piece. She paints in pastels as well, and loves painting landscapes in this medium.  She also creates studio pieces, based on her outdoor work and photography & feeling memory from the site.

“There are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day, when we seem to see beyond the usual. Such are the moments of our greatest happiness. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom. If one could but recall his vision by some sort of sign. It was in this hope that the arts were invented. Sign posts on the way to what may be. Sign posts toward greater knowledge.” - Robert Henri
